NAPA Laughter Festival 2019

KARACHI: – The National Academy of Performing Arts (Napa) is going to organize its second Karachi Laughter Fest 2019 from 10t o 20 January. The event is featuring comedy plays and standup comedy performances. This information was revealed in a press conference by the artistic director of the Napa Repertory Theatre Zain Ahmed at a press conference on Friday evening at Napa’s premises.

He said the Napa was organizing festivals since 2012 as at that time we organized Napa’s first theatre festival. It was followed by a young director’s festival. Moreover, we organized an event for children as well. Last year in January 2017, we had our first Laughter Festival. In this festival, we will present the comedy of different genre.

Mr Ahmed said like the previous year, this festival will have six plays, five of which have been prepared by Napa graduates, and the sixth is in collaboration with an Italian director Marco Luly.

Apart from that, there are standup comedy shows. We have seen in the recent past in Karachi that such programs have gaining popularity.Performances are being held at even unconventional venues as well. It’s a positive sign. The people of the city who had seen tough time and face urban tension, anything that makes them laugh should be welcomed.

Mr Ahmed informed that the fest also had the Dastangoi segment. It’s one of our outreach program, which commenced in 2017 and still ongoing in different centres. In this program, we not only give training of storytelling but also polish the art of story writing so stories of our region and culture come out.

The plays in the festival contain subjects that vary from political satire to farce to romance, which lends a variety to the effort, he added.

The six plays which will be presented in this festival are Haye Muhabbat directed by Uzma Sabeen, An Evening of Commedia Dell Arte by Italian director Marco Lully, Biwi Ho Tou Apni by Aisha Hassan, Aar Paar by Rauf Afridi, Ghanchakar by S.M. Jameel and Jungle Mein Mangal Bazar by Meesam Naqvi. All plays will commence at 8 PM at Zia Mohyeddin Theater.

At NAPA Basement, standup comedy shows will be held including Dastan Ki Aik Sham by Zain Nazar, The Sequel Don’t Laugh I’m Serious by Faheem Azam, Fil Badi Full Masti by Hassaan Bin Shaheen and Socho Tou Sahi by Usman Mazhar.  All shows will begin at 6 pm.
